What is a Scenario?
The Maptician Scenario tool allows you to create “sandboxed” versions of your office in order to experiment with different layouts, seat assignments, or even architecture.
Changes you make to the scenario do not affect the original map unless the scenario is implemented.
The Scenario Manager
Every scenario action, branching, viewing, comparing, implementing, renaming, and deleting - now happens in one place: the Scenario Manager. You no longer navigate through separate screens for each action.
- Navigate to the Locations tab.
- In the top navigation menu, click Scenarios.
This opens the Scenario Manager: a location/map/scenario tree on the left (the side panel) and the selected scenario's details, map preview, and metrics on the right (the detail view).

Finding a Scenario in the Side Panel
- The side panel lists your locations, and each location expands to show its maps, and each map expands to show its scenarios.
- Use the search field at the top of the side panel to filter by scenario name, office name, map name, floor, suite, or description.
- Click a scenario's row to select it. The detail view on the right updates to show that scenario.

ℹ️ NOTE
On narrower windows (1100px or less), the side panel collapses into a slide-out drawer. Use the show/hide tab to open or close it, or press Escape to close it once open.
Create a Scenario (Branch)
Creating a new scenario is called branching. Follow the steps below:
- In the Scenario Manager side panel, select the map you want to branch a scenario from.
- Click Branch Scenario in the detail view's action bar.
-
Name your new scenario.
- When naming a scenario, be descriptive about its intent. For example, "Alternate Seat Layout" or "50% Capacity".
- Click Branch Scenario to confirm.

Once created, the scenario is an exact copy of your original map. This allows you to make changes to the scenario without impacting the original floor plan.
ℹ️ NOTE
You can also start a scenario from inside the Map Editor, using its own Create Scenario action while a map is loaded. This is a separate entry point into scenario creation, but the resulting scenario appears in and is fully usable from the Scenario Manager.
Opening a Scenario for Editing
From the Scenario Manager, select a scenario, then use the action bar to open it in the editor you need:
- Click Map Editor to open the scenario in the Map Editor and make architecture, seat, room, zone, section, or signage changes.
- Click Assignments to open the scenario in the Assignments Manager and make seat assignment changes.

From either editor, your changes save directly to the scenario. The tabs in the main navigation menu show you all maps and scenarios you have open.

Scenario and Map Locks
When a scenario or a primary map is currently open by any user, whether that is you or someone else, a small lock icon appears next to it in the side panel. Hover over the lock icon to see a tooltip showing who has it locked.
What locking affects depends on who holds the lock:
- Locked by another user: A matching lock label also appears in the detail view (for example, “Locked by Maptician Director (editor)”). Delete Scenario, Rename, Implement Scenario, Map Editor, and Assignments are all disabled until that user checks it back in. You can still view the scenario's map preview and metrics.
- Locked by you: If you are the one who currently has the scenario open (for example, in the Map Editor), the corresponding button (Map Editor or Assignments) stays enabled for you, since you are the one holding the lock. Other users still see it as locked and disabled for them.

⚠️ IMPORTANT
A scenario locked by another user is read-only for you: you can still view its map and metrics, but Delete Scenario, Rename, Implement Scenario, Map Editor, and Assignments are disabled until that user checks it back in.
Compare Scenarios
To compare scenarios, select one in the side panel first. The map preview and metrics for that scenario appear in the detail view on the right. Then select a different scenario under the same map, and the detail view updates to reflect your new selection. Switch back and forth between scenarios to compare the same data points.
- Navigate to the Locations tab.
- In the top menu, click Scenarios.
- In the side panel, expand your location and map.
-
Click a scenario to select it, then click a different scenario under the same map to compare.
- If you have multiple scenarios branching from the same map, you can flip through all of them to compare data and decide which to move forward with.
Scenario Analysis Tools
- Navigate to the Locations tab.
- In the top menu, click Scenarios.
- In the side panel, select a scenario.
-
In the detail view's Metrics panel, use the following tools:
- Category groups: Metrics are organized into expandable categories, such as Seats, Rooms, Zones, and Occupants. Department-level breakdowns now appear as sub-groups inside each category, rather than in a separate Departments tab.
- Show/Hide Layers: These buttons allow you to turn off information layers that you do not wish to see on the map. Click a layer's button to toggle it on or off.

-
Hover:
- Category rows: Hovering over a row in a Metrics category (for example, a room type or a department) highlights the matching seats or rooms on the map preview.
Below is an example of hovering over a room type of Private Office, where all the rooms configured with that type are highlighted in the map preview above.

Print a Scenario Report
- Select a scenario in the side panel.
- Wait for the map preview to fully load.
- Click Print in the action bar.
- Choose which sections to include, or use Select all / Clear all.
- Click Open Print Preview.

ℹ️ NOTE
If you click Print immediately after selecting a scenario, before its map preview has fully loaded, nothing may happen. Wait a moment for the preview to finish loading and try again.
Implement a Scenario
Implementing a scenario overwrites the original map with the current scenario. This cannot be undone. Some changes, such as changes in seat assignments, cannot be easily reversed once implemented.

Implementing now walks you through a 3-step confirmation wizard:
- Navigate to the Locations tab.
- In the top menu, click Scenarios.
- In the side panel, select the scenario you want to implement.
-
Click Implement Scenario in the action bar.
- Step 1 - Implementing a scenario: Confirms that you want to begin. Click Continue.

-
Step 2 - Scenario active mode: Choose Active or Inactive mode, then click Continue.
- Active mode makes the map and all of its resources live and reservable as soon as the implementation completes. Inactive mode deactivates the map after implementation, hiding it from users until it is reactivated.
- If the target map is currently live and you choose Inactive mode, a warning appears on this step: implementing in inactive mode will deactivate the map for all users and cancel its current and upcoming reservations. Review it before clicking Continue.

-
Step 3 - Confirm implementation: Review the impact summary, then click Implement Scenario to finish.
- If any reservations will be canceled by this change, this step lists how many, along with a row for each changed resource (for example, a seat) and the number of reservations that resource impacts.
- This step also names the live map being replaced and the scenario replacing it, and reiterates that the action cannot be undone.

⚠️ IMPORTANT
Once you click Implement Scenario on the final step, the change is live and cannot be undone from within Maptician. Review the summary on step 3 carefully before confirming.
Delete a Scenario

- Navigate to the Locations tab.
- In the top menu, click Scenarios.
- In the side panel, select the scenario you want to delete.
- Click Delete Scenario in the action bar.
- Confirm the deletion in the dialog that appears.

Once deleted, the scenario no longer appears in the side panel beneath its map.
Rename or Describe a Scenario

- Select the scenario in the side panel.
- In the detail view, click the pencil icon next to the scenario name, or the Add a scenario description link if none is set yet.
- Update the name and/or description.
- Save your changes.

ℹ️ NOTE
Both the name and description are searchable from the side panel's search field.
